Devotional Passage: 2 Kings 17:9-18

And they rejected his statutes, and his covenant that he made with their fathers, and his testimonies which he testified against them; and they followed vanity, and became vain, and went after the heathen that were round about them, concerning whom the Lord had charged them, that they should not do like them. - 2 Kings 17:15

Every year though a cooperative arrangement with a Japanese Baptist College, Anderson College hosts 5 to 10 Japanese young women. The Japanese students are known for their beauty and their respect for learning. They usually don't like our food, but they always look forward to shopping in our malls. Certain American symbols of our consumer culture are highly prized in Japan and are much less expensive here.

A time of abandonment to sin in Israel's life is pictured in 2 Kings 17:9-18. The New International Version translates 2 Kings 17:15 this way: "They followed worthless idols and themselves become worthless."
